Summary:

The Distance Learning & Digital Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the daily operations of HistoryConnects, the VHS’s award-winning distance learning initiative. This individual also participates in the continued development of HistoryConnects through the design and implementation of new and engaging online programming for a variety of VHS constituencies that will further the VHS’s mission to connecting people from around the world to America’s past through the unparalleled story of Virginia.

The Distance Learning & Digital Outreach Coordinator:

  • Develops, delivers, and evaluates programs presented through HistoryConnects
  • Plans, implements, and delivers professional development to teachers via the online teacher institute, Primarily Virginia: MeadWestvaco Online Teacher Institute
  • Trains staff, volunteers, and interns in the use of HistoryConnects equipment, program delivery, and historical content as needed
  • Assists in the creation of multimedia programming, including the development of associated pre- and post-experience materials
  • Oversees all scheduling and billing procedures associated with HistoryConnects programs
  • Communicates with individuals, groups, and organizations to determine school and teacher program needs, resources needs, strategies, and logistics
  • Works with the Information Technology Manager to identify and resolve technical issues related to HistoryConnects
  • Advises, consults, and advocates for the adoption and implementation of distance and digital learning in cultural institutions and schools
  • Serves as a VHS liaison to major educational organizations across the state and nationally, including potential partnership institutions
  • Works with Senior Officer for Corporate, Foundations, and Government Relations to prepare grant proposals and reports that support HistoryConnects programming
  • Identifies new technologies and evaluates appropriateness of use in VHS
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary:

  • Ability to organize and communicate information, graphics, and other media around teaching themes to produce digital materials and programs for individuals and groups
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in online course development, instructional design, social networking, webinar, webcast, video and audio production and conferencing, and learning management systems
  • Experience working with various participatory online learning platforms including Polycom conferencing equipment, Zoom, and Skype
  • Excellent analytical, research, project management, budgeting,  and interpersonal skills
  • Thorough knowledge of United States, Virginia, and southern history
  • Knowledge of Virginia and national K-12 curriculum and 21st-century teaching strategies
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills including a demonstrated ability to write and edit materials at various grade/age levels
  • Can meet the demands of sitting for periods of time at a desk or computer workstation. Some amount of standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying, and other movements may be required. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Proficiency with Mac and PC computers, Microsoft Office suite, and Photoshop

Education and experience required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, history, museum studies, digital curriculum design, or equivalent experience. Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of five years experience developing synchronous and asynchronous interactive online events, courses, and workshops for children or adults
